Adventure to Trakai and Trakai Castle

We finally took our first adventure outside of the city.  We had a nice (albeit snowy and icy) drive out to the lakeside city of Trakai.  The thing to see in this quaint little town is Trakai Castle.  The castle sits on an island on Lake Galve and has been painstakingly restored to its original red-brick Gothic glory.  It dates from around 1400.  A footbridge links it to the shoreline.  You can tour the castle, and entering each of the rooms, there is a story about what the rooms were and are now the Trakai History Museum.  It charts the history of the castle and features plenty of medieval weaponry, traditional costumes, furniture, and personal items.  In the summer, they host concerts, plays and mock medieval battles.  The day we visited was FREEZING COLD, but we braved the snowstorm and had fun exploring the castle.  Although much of the walking around is outside and up and down stairwells, once you entered a room, it was heated, so it was nice to get out of the cold and warm up a bit.  We will have to come back in the summer, I'm sure it will look quite different, but I thought it was lovely even in winter.  Enjoy!
